October 2012 Hotel Manager's Picks | Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf Hotel

The month of October ushers in some of the best weather of the year in San Francisco as the central valley cools, limiting the fog that is pulled in from the Pacific. Bright, sunny days are ahead where you can actually don shorts and flip-flops and not worry about being comfortable ... it's our Indian Summer, so enjoy.

October also marks an annual tradition in the Bay Area ... Fleet Week! In addition, this year Fleet Week also overlaps with America's Cup World Series San Francisco with racing taking place all along the Fisherman's Wharf waterfront.

Fleet Week originated in 1908 when President Theodore Roosevelt's "Great White Fleet'' visited our City. It became a San Francisco annual tradition in 1981, when then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein established it as a city celebration.

Fleet Week is now the Bay Area's opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women of our nation's Navy and Marine services.

Taking place in early October, Fleet Week will feature Navy ships dock-side, while the Blue Angels and other aircraft fly above the San Francisco Bay. Fisherman's Wharf serves as the prime viewing spot for the Fleet Week airshow and the hub of Fleet Week related events, all listed below under Best City Pick.

To help plan your stay, visit our San Francisco Events page on our website for details of some of the more interesting events that are happening in San Francisco this month. Regardless of what you have planned, enjoy visiting our beautiful city.

Concurrent with Fleet Week, the second AC World Series race in the host city of the 34th America's Cup will also take place along the Fisherman's Wharf waterfront. Teams of the 34th America's Cup will compete on the iconic San Francisco Bay race course area ahead of the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup and America's Cup Finals. Each AC World Series regatta will be a combination of practice and championship racing, with additional practice sailing on-site ahead of each event.

It all began when the yacht America, representing the young New York Yacht Club, out sailed the best the British could offer on an August day in 1851. San Francisco is one of the first stops on the 2012-13 America’s Cup World Series circuit. Teams from France, Italy, Korea, China, New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom and ORACLE TEAM USA will compete August 21-26, 2012. This marks the first time the teams will race in the host city of the 34th America's Cup in 2013.

All activites take place throughout Fisherman's Wharf the week of October 1 to 7, 2012. For further information, visit: www.visitfishermanswharf.com and www.americascup.com.
